How to Prepare Your Waste Oil Heater for the Cold Months Ahead

It’s cold out there, but you can still prep your waste oil heater for the winter season. By following the checklist below now, you can rest assured your waste oil heater will be primed to deliver its best performance when you need it most.

Winter Checklist for Your Waste Oil Furnace

1. Take a moment to dust off your Owner’s Manual.
Before doing any maintenance tasks on your furnace, we encourage you to review your Clean Energy Heating Systems Owner’s Manual. This will refresh your memory about how to perform routine maintenance and use your heater safely. Your Owner’s Manual is your guide to proper operation and peak performance.

2. Complete routine maintenance tasks.
If you haven’t yet done so this year, complete the annual maintenance activities recommended for your furnace. Clean the oil filter and pump head screen, and clean sludge and water from your used oil storage tank.

Also, take care of the servicing needed at various hours of operation milestones. For example, we recommend that you remove the ash from the heat exchanger every 1,200 hours of use. Every 2,000 to 3,000 hours of use, you should clean the nozzle adapter heat block.

Review your maintenance records to see what tasks you have and have not done, then tend to what remains unfinished, so that you’re not scrambling when winter hits full-force.

3. Start ‘er up.
When you’re done taking care of the maintenance to-dos, fire up your furnace to make sure it’s blowing hot air and otherwise working correctly. If anything isn’t working as it should be, contact a service technician to troubleshoot and correct the issue.
