6 Rules To Follow When Setting Up Or Maintaining Your Waste Oil Furnace’s Oil Storage Tank

A waste oil furnace can dramatically cut your energy costs over time. In fact, we’ve had customers enjoy a return on their investment in as little as one year.

While your exact savings and ROI will depend on how much used petroleum products you generate and your typical heating expenses, one thing’s for certain—installing and maintaining your waste oil furnace components according to the requirements in your owner’s manual will help ensure your equipment performs safely and at optimal efficiency for years to come.

For example, your Clean Energy Heating Systems Owner’s Manual provides important information about setting up your oil storage tank.

As you set up your tank, or any time you’re performing regular maintenance we ask that you keep your owner’s manual handy and heed these warnings, requirements, and recommendations:

  • Review NFPA requirements and all state and local codes that apply to you, so you install your tank in compliance with all applicable rules and laws. Review these requirements and codes annually as they can change.
  • We recommend you set up your tank indoors.
  • Place the tank in a position that will enable you to mount the oil pump as closely as possible.
  • Only use a tank with a drain at the bottom. This will provide a convenient way to remove the dirt and sludge that naturally accumulates on the bottom of the tank over time.
  • Realize that some state and local codes require tanks to be vented to the outside. Know your codes! And, check them every year to assure you’re compliant.
  • Make sure your entire staff knows what substances can safely be added to the used oil supply. To help prevent human error, apply the warning label we provide near the fill location. Confirm that the label is still visible each year and talk to new employees about these important set-up and maintenance guidelines.

We provide a diagram and additional information in the owner’s manual, so please refer to it as you set up your oil storage tank. That’s the most effective way to ensure safe operation and to get the best performance possible from your waste oil furnace.

If you’re unsure about any of the information or instructions in your owner’s manual, remember we’re just a phone call away!
