11 Rules To Follow When Installing Your Waste Oil Furnace’s Chimney Components

When installing a waste oil furnace that will save you big money on your business’s heating bills for years to come, following the instructions in the owner’s manual to a “T” will help ensure that it operates safely and efficiently.

For example, the Clean Energy Heating Systems Owner’s Manual provides important information about installing chimney components. It lists considerations and requirements for optimal safety and performance.

As you install your Clean Energy furnace’s chimney components, keep your owner’s manual handy for specific instructions, and be sure to heed these warnings and requirements:

  • To avoid creating a fire hazard, use double wall “Class A” insulated stack when making a penetration through the roof or side wall of your building.
  • To make a watertight seal, install proper flashing around the exterior penetration of the stack.
  • If you use single wall stack on the exterior of your building, it will cause the stack gases to cool rapidly, creating a back draft. This could damage critical burner components.
  • You may use single wall stack inside your building. Just make sure you observe proper distance from combustibles.
  • Use only a “Class A” non-restrictive stack cap.
  • For the CE-140, CE-180, and CE-250 furnace models, you must use 6” I.D. stack components.
  • For the CE-330 furnace model, you must use 8” I.D. stack components.
  • Make sure you have a vertical chimney of at least of 10 feet to ensure -.02” w.c. draft over fire.
  • Keep horizontal runs short and slope horizontal sections at no less than 1/4” per foot.
  • Don’t get fancy; keep the stack installation simple. If you have multiple turns and horizontal runs, you’ll reduce the natural draft of the furnace, risking damage to critical burner components.
  • Monitor draft with a barometric damper.
  • Does your building use an exhaust fan? If yes, make sure adequate make-up air is available. Otherwise, it will create a vacuum in your building and cause a back draft at the furnace, which will damage critical burner components.
